Summer Beach Break (Issyk-Kul)

Beaches run mid-June to mid-September. Peak: July–August (warmest water/air).

Tip: Book early for July–August; weekdays are quieter.

Skiing

Season December–March; best snow January–February.

Tip: March offers softer weather and shorter lines; check avalanche warnings.

Wellness

Sanatoria work year-round, most comfortable in March–May and September–October.

Kumys therapy: May–June.

Tip: Confirm indications/programs with the clinic; book treatments with accommodation.

City & Culture

Best in April–June and September–October (mild temps, fewer rains).

Tip: Visit markets/museums in the morning.

Eco-tourism & Trekking

Ideal June–September; high passes are more reliable July–August.

Tip: Dress in layers, start early, allow time for weather changes.

Sports (Alpinism, Cycling, Rafting)

  • Alpinism/high altitude: July–August
  • Cycling/trail running: May–October (high altitude—summer)
  • Rafting: high water May–June; steady September

Tip: Get sports insurance; check permits/guide requirements.

Hunting (what to know)

  • Trophy (ibex, argali/mountain sheep): Main season mid-Aug–Nov, plus a Jan–Feb short period (based on quota and/or weather). Peak Oct–Nov.
  • Bird hunting (e.g., chukar): usually Sept–Nov (foothills, dry rocky slopes).
  • Permission & Rules: only by license & quota in specific areas; foreigners need a hunting license, firearm permit, and huntsman guide.
  • Trophy export: CITES needed for argali hunting (see App. II) + vet papers; USFWS permit for when entering to the US with a trophy.
  • Nature Conservation: Snow leopard is fully protected and prohibited from hunting on.

Tip: Verify quotas/seasons and paperwork in advance; plan extra time for mountain logistics.
